this is very cool. i have no idea who they are, or what they’re about – but i’m diggin the music.
do you really wanna know how i was dancing on the floor?
i was trying to phone you when i’m crawling out the door
i’m amazed at you, the things you say that you don’t do
lyric from the song ‘a&e‘
i’m still absorbing this new record… but on my initial listens it’s not the complete antithesis of their ’05 release ‘supernature‘ that some of the reviews would have you believe. granted, gone are the thumping beats and pure disco ecstasy of that disk, but in their place are witty little synth lines (made with antique electronic keyboards – how cool) matched with subtle acoustic guitar, vocal multit-racking and arpeggios (in other words, fairly standard goldfrapp-fare). the beats are most assuredly there. they’re just not terribly obvious. but it’s definitely a toe-tapping album
many reviews are calling this the morning after for the disco hangover of ‘supernature‘, and that’s not all together wrong.
in my initial listens off of their myspace page, i was thinking this would be a perfect weekend morning album, and the more i listen, the more i think that’s true.
lyrically it’s terribly english – very witty. very drool. very obscure (umm, alison, are you channeling my beloved kate bush a bit?). but at the end of the day, these songs have already begun to find the nooks and crannies of my mind. the tunes are incredibly catchy. just in a quieter sort of way.
the lead off single ‘a&e’ is quite possibly my favorite lead off single in a long long time. and the video is just fucking weird enough that you can’t help but love it.
robbie williams – break america
ignore the images, they’re just placeholder images for the audio track. this is a brand new studio track from mr. williams (see cb, if you wish hard enough, i’ll talk about other stuff besides siouxsie).
the tune is a big piece of disco bravado from my future husband. i dig it. i can’t wait to play this loud in my car whilst driving down the freeway at excessive speeds.
…i do have some good news; just found the gutter twins (i’ve posted about them here and here) are coming to minneapolis on march 8! this is tremendous news…. 2008 is shaping up to be a fun year for me musically…. siouxsie live in february and now the gutter twins in my home town. happy happy kyle.
ooh, and they’re playing first ave. one of my most favorite venue’s for live music. it doesn’t get much better than first ave.
head over to www.chelsearodgers.com to get a look at the lastest prince video (for the song ‘chelsea rodgers’) – the vid itself isn’t that great (tho’ it does have some nice moments), but it’s the best song off his latest ‘planet earth’ and it heavily features the divine shelby j. on lead vox. (fyi, it was filmed live during matthew williamson’s recent london fashion week show)…
MATTHEW WILLIAMSONIF you’re coming home after five years on the New York schedule – to an exhibition feting your decade of success in the industry, no less – you’ve got to make an impression… How to really get noticed? How about Prince performing from his seat in the front row? That just about did it for Matthew Williamson this morning. A tent in Eaton Square shook with the tension of a style World Cup as the fashion glitterati hustled for their closer-than-close front row seats; squeals of excitement and cheering from backstage gave us a clue that something mega was about to happen… and then a couple of Motown backing singers (microphone afro and lash-to-brow eye glitter – we’re talking the real deal…), took to the stage and we didn’t know whether to sit and clap or stand up and dance. All of a sudden identical twin dancers, in purple silk shifts with silver sashes, appeared to perform pop dressage down the catwalk with Prince himself singing his latest song from his seat in the
front row. Until then, knowing as we did that he’d been in town for the Couture Gala last night (wearing white Versace), we assumed he’d just come to support Williamson (and hide his Gala hangover behind those glossy black shades and matching trilby) – but now we hear the whole thing will serve as Prince’s new video, no less. From front row to MTV… It was a serious fashion moment, dahlink – and Williamson gave himself a job to live up to the moment with his new collection after such an eye-popping opener.(September 19 2007, AM)
i was thrilled when i got home when i opened my mailbox and this greeted me:
now, firstly – ew is my bible. i read it cover to cover. i love it. but to be greated with the perfection that is mr. crowe – well hmmm if that didn’t just make my day, not much else will. i loves me some russell. god he’s dead.fucking.sexy.
for some cool as shit graphics check this out:
it’s an alternative version of the video for siouxsie’s ‘into a swan’. i’ve loved that mirror effect since prince and the revolution did it for the ‘when doves cry’ video… i think it’s used well here.
copies of a couple blake lewis tracks (the 6th cut off of last season’s american idol) circulating around the net… i gave a quick listen to ‘break another’ and ‘know my name’. of the two, ‘break another’ has a bit of potential. it’s typical pop-fluff mixed with a bit of disco and of course, that scat singing that blake’s known for. ‘know my name’ however is complete dreck.
speaking of dreck, the new britney came out today.
now – i’ve given the album a listen (no i didn’t pay for it – it’s everywhere on the net)… and i gotta say, it’s not quite the disaster i thought it might be (color me surprised). that said however – that album cover is terrible [the girl/record company machine has never done great cover art]. the album itself is full of beats (toxic was certainly a precurser to this highly electronic album) and there are some pretty slammin tunes… let’s face it however, this is less to do with britney as much as it’s about her producers (bloodshy & avant (from ‘toxic’), the clutch & the neptunes).
there’s an urgency to these hook heavy/slamming dance-floor tracks… killer loops – hot production, and utterly disposable – all at the same time (but really isn’t that fairly normal in today’s next-best-thing world)… time will tell if the album holds up well – but for now, it’s the perfect summertime record (wait – time to check the calender… last time i checked these kind of jam’s fair better in summertime)… the nice thing here is that for a couple of tracks you forget that she’s a trainwreck… and you remember this is a girl that is capable of a funtime dance jam… it’s nice to get lost in pop-fluff every now and then…
…at least until i need some substance…. speaking of where did i put that me’shell ndegeocello record…?
*don’t you think that’s probably the first time siouxsie & britney have been mentioned in the same breath? lol
lots of stuff rumbling through my head – haven’t figured out how to get it all out and post here, so until i do – here’s my favorite piece of music from the past couple of months in video form. it also has one of the greatest lyrics of recent times..
the video is freshly released…brand spankin’ new music for your tuesday.
unkle, hold my hand:
i really love this video…. beautiful. and haunting.
watch the whole thing. i love the ending.
promotional pic for recoil’s (aka alan wilder) new disk subHuman
a) i love this new disk… to quote one review “the new album gives the term ‘electro-blues’ actual flesh and bones.
b) i’m really digging the first single prey. especially the ‘reduction’ mix from itunes.
c) i’ve always had a lil’ crush on alan wilder. ssshhh… don’t tell anyone.
d) if anyone’s interested in checking it out, and if your not familer with recoil’s work – just a word of warning… this isn’t easy/casual/breezy music. to say it’s a lil’ challenging is an understatement. but it’s beautiful just the same.
so i’m in san francisco (god i forgot how much i love this city)….
model prep was today (wen’t verywell – so well in fact…:) i got early enough to jump in a cab and head down to amoeba records.
i found a number of treasure (one of which i didn’t even know existed)…
the first up
2 many dj’s / radio soulwax live; get yer yo yo’s out
secondly; the “curated” box set: new order / retro (possibly one of my favorite album covers of all time)
and lastly, the brand-fuckin’-new recoil album subhuman (ray, pay attention!). i knew this was coming, but had no idea it had been released.
i need to spend some time with my new treasures, i’m sure i’ll post about them more in the future. off to a late dinner now. oh, and of course, the virgin megastore is 2 blocks away from me… i’m sure i’ll spend some more cash there tomorrow.
hi. how ya been? mad busy here (same ol’ story)…. a couple of highlights.
- came off of the red ribbon ride last sunday. it was an incredible ride. amazing and bittersweet. for many reasons, it will probably be my last. i’m not giving up the cause however, there will be something in my future regarding hiv/aids – something amazing. and to keep me busy until then, my good friend kari is starting the breast cancer ride; a bike ride to raise much needed funds for a local charity that serves the breast cancer community in minnesota – pretty excited about that. i’m not saying forsure that i won’t be back for the rrr, but i’m ready for new challenges and new ways to support the community. with kari leaving the ride, i commissioned an incredible video which i hope to get converted to mpeg and will post it as soon as i can. she’s an amazing woman and i’m truly blessed to count her as a friend. i’m in awe of what she accomplised on the rrr and can’t wait to see what she does next.
(pic of kari and i on day one; yea, i really am that pale… damn)
- i’m off to san francisco for a hair show tomorrow – should be great, i really love sf so i can’t wait to get back. the show will be great and i’m excited to direct it (but more excited that one of my favorite record stores; ameba is in sf… how much damage can i do).
- had more work done on the never ending tattoo tonight – mostly some more background work and a bit more on the prayer flags – the cool bit tho? i great zen infitiy circle surrounding my elbow…. sweet ink.
- i’m about half way thru with harry potter 7… it’s killing me that i’m not reading faster – just been exhausted since i got home from the ride (and in-turn, the global sales meeting)… hoping to finish it on the plane tomorrow.
(picture of one of the crew members of the ride (sophie) who dressed as harry all day on saturday.. how rockin’ is she?)
- also just bought prince’s latest – planet earth. so far so good; easily the best thing he’s done in 10 years…. it’s a headphone album tho’ i think – can’t wait to listen to it on the ipod
ok, that’s about it – need to finish laundry and pack for ‘frisco (my god i’m boring)…. ta
