the company my mom works for (as controller) has been in the process of being sold for the last couple of months - throughout the entire process she had been repeatedly assured that her job was safe with the new company.
the sale became final today and at 4:30pm the new owner came into her office and informed her that they would not be keeping her on their staff and since they had not accepted or processed her w-2 information she wasn’t actually an employee of their company and wouldn’t be getting a severance.
this after my mom worked for the original company for nearly 7 years and spent the last few months working with the new company to ensure a smooth transition.
nice.
so now, she’s 60 years old, unemployed and scared about her future.
there’s a special place in hell for assholes like the new companies owner.

I hope your Mom’s former place of employment tanks and all the executives go to prison for embezzlement. Tell your Mom to look into working for a college. (They do have colleges in Minnesota, right) They tend to be much friendlier to hiring older workers. Be aware though, the hiring process in academia moves a a pace that makes glaciers look like they’re sprinting.
Did I mention that I also hope that the shitbags that fired your Mom are murdered painfully and slowly by their insane and sadistic cellmate Bubba and then spend eternity in the hottest and most gruesome circle of hell?

Yeah, there is definitely some karmic retribution waiting for these bastards. I don’t know if there’s anything that can be done — companies don’t have to provide severance packages (they usually do it because they can then require the employee to sign something that says in exchange for this severance money, you agree not to sue us for anything we’ve ever done). She should be able to get unemployment — not that that will necessarily make up for her salary, but it might pay the bills for a few months.
She should stay in touch with her colleagues, for sure, and if anyone decides to get a lawyer involved, maybe a class action could come out of this somehow. Fuckers!

Very sorry to hear about your Mom. There is a special place in hell waiting for those bastards (or at least some severe karmic retribution - cockroaches, anyone?). But sad to say, this is the new Amerikkka. Welcome to our future.
